Misfits Mid-Life Crisis Adventures in East London.
Week 355 Saturday 3rd until Friday 9thApril 2021.
Hope everyone had a good Easter and ate lots of chocolate.

This week I was going to tell you about a virtual Easter Egg hunt, the egg was found at my old family home which looks exactly the same from the picture on the website. During Mike Skippers weekly on-line quiz, I got full marks for Round 4 all about Doctor Who. I was interviewed about my interest in Doctor Who by a friend who presents a programme on an Internet Radio Station. Due to sound issues, we are re-recording this coming weekend. No, I’m not going to tell you any of that.

If you read last week’s ramble you will know I had a little fall and sprained an ankle. Over the course of the week the swelling and bruising got worse. One of my sisters and mum are both ex nurses, my sister did tell me the day I had the accident that I should go and have it looked at. I didn’t, because the NHS is very busy, and a sprain will get better given time and rest. Because I am working from home I don’t need to be on that ankle very much. If I was travelling on public transport, walking to and from work maybe I would have gone and had it looked at straight away.

To cut a long story short, on bank holiday Monday I sent my sister and mum a picture. My baby sister rang me immediately saying I needed to get this looked at straight away. The next morning I went to a local hospital, because I knew there would be a long wait I made sure I had lots of TV and films, podcasts downloaded. The nurse I saw initially kept poking and prodding while asking repeatedly asking how I did the damage, it felt like she didn’t believe I was just out shopping. It was back to the waiting room to watch more downloads for what seemed like ages until I was called for a number of X-rays. After this I watched more in the very busy waiting room, getting concerned as my tablet battery was low and I was running out of downloads.

My name was called, this was when thing turned a little surreal. In the examination room I was asked to lay down in order for a plaster cast to be put on my foot and lower leg. This meant that my skinny jean’s needed to be cut along the seam up to my knee. The shock on my face said must have said everything, the nurse about to plaster me asked if I have been told earlier about the fracture and what was to be done, I replied an honest “no”. Once the plaster was fitted, I was issue crutches, this was when the original nurse (who should have informed me about what was happening) handed me a prescription saying that I needed to go straight away to another hospital (3 miles away) to be shown how to take the blood thinning meds. I replied “surely it’s a pill”. Just as the original nurse was leaving she informed me that this medication was a daily injection. Because I didn’t want to have to wait another 6hrs at a different hospital, I got a crash course from the nice nurse that plastered me.

The next problem how to get home, I couldn’t drive. While being plastered I did think I might be able to manage it, but once I saw the size of the cast I realised that was out of the question. Ringing home my friend stopped work and made her way to meet me. When she arrived all she could do was laugh, I sat in a wheelchair in the doorway on the phone with my sister, what a site. No wonder she pissed herself laughing, by the way I was laughing as well. At the car I lay across the back seat as my friend took control of the vehicle, but after a couple of minutes while still in the car park we realised that because she hadn’t driven in 20yrs this was not practical.

There really was no one I could ring, then I thought of our neighbour. Luckily I had his number and he was home, a few hours later he was due to start a night shift as a London fire fighter. In his job he daily helps and saves people, he definitely helped and saved us that afternoon. Once again I lay across the back seats with my bad leg resting on the arm rest of the crutches, every time a London Bus went passed I wondered what a passenger must have seen and thought.

When we arrived home that’s when I found out that simple things, I do all the time and take for granted are not as easy with one good leg and crutches (Sandy (Roger Tonge) on Crossroads, made it look so easy when I was a child). The injecting has been an issue, it’s not normal to stab a 1 cm hypodermic needle into your own folds of fat. I have been daily WhatsApping my sister for help and encouragement. The first 2 evenings my friend had to do it, because I just couldn’t. On day 3, I was a brave girl picking up the small cylinder and without thinking just jabbed myself. My sister on screen and friend were both very happy, think of proud parents celebrating when a child has used the potty correctly the first time.

At the time of writing this is day 4. I have a phone call from the fracture clinic next week, which I hope will give me an idea of how long I may be like this. This week I really have learned a major life lesson, I should have listened to my sister Hel (And Mum) and gone to have my ankle looked at after the accident and not waited. My message to every one reading this is, always listen to the medical professionals in the family. Remember they’re the qualified one.
